Jinn, magic and the evil eye

In short
- Jinn are real. Allah created them from fire, before humans. Like us, they can choose, and there are Muslims and non-Muslims among them.
- Shaytan is from the jinn. His main tool is the whisper, and his plan is weak. He has no power over a believer who trusts Allah.
- Magic is real and it is a major sin. The evil eye is real too. But nothing harms you except by Allah's permission.
- Your protection is simple: the morning and evening adhkar, Ayat al-Kursi at night, the last three surahs, and ruqyah with Quran and sahih duas.
- Do not blame every problem on jinn. Most problems have normal causes. Make dua, and see a doctor too. Stay away from people who claim to know the unseen.
A calm look at the unseen
Allah praises those who believe in the unseen1: things that are real but we cannot see, like the angels, Jannah, and the jinn.
Many people learn about jinn, magic and the evil eye through scary stories. Some blame every illness and every family fight on them. That is not what Islam teaches. This chapter has one aim: to replace fear with knowledge. You will see three things:
- These things are real, so we do not laugh at them.
- They are much weaker than Allah, so we do not fear them.
- Allah gave us simple protection, so we are never helpless.

Who the jinn are
Nabi ﷺ said: the angels were created from light, the jinn from fire, and Adam from what you have been told, meaning clay2.
- Made from fire. Allah created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire3, before humans4.
- Made to worship Allah, like us. I did not create the jinn and humans except to worship Me5.
- They can choose. Angels always obey. Jinn are like us: they can obey or disobey, and they will be judged for it.
- We do not normally see them. Shaytan and his kind see you from where you do not see them6.
Muslim jinn and non-Muslim jinn
A group of jinn once heard the Quran and said: we have heard an amazing Quran. It guides to what is right, so we believe in it7. Then they went back to warn their people8. The jinn say about themselves: some of us are Muslims, and some of us have gone wrong9. So not every jinn is evil.
Jinn do not know the unseen
Jinn worked for the prophet Sulayman by Allah's permission10. He died leaning on his staff, and the jinn did not know. They kept working until a small creature ate his staff and he fell. Then they saw: if we had known the unseen, we would not have stayed in that hard work11. Only Allah knows the unseen12.

Shaytan and his whispers
Iblis, the shaytan (devil), is from the jinn13. He refused to bow to Adam out of pride, saying: I am better than him. You created me from fire and him from clay14. Since then he is the enemy of humans. Any jinn who follows him in evil is also called a shaytan.
His main tool is the whisper
Shaytan cannot force you to do anything. He whispers: a bad idea, a doubt, a fear. We seek refuge from the whisperer who hides, who whispers into people's hearts15.
- Everyone has one. Nabi ﷺ said every person has a companion from the jinn. Even you? he was asked. He said: yes, but Allah helped me against him, so he only tells me good16.
- He tries to scare you. That is only shaytan making you fear his friends. So do not fear them. Fear Me17.
His plan is weak
- Allah says: the plan of shaytan is weak18, and he has no power over those who believe and trust their Lord19.
- When the adhan is called, shaytan runs away20.
- When a whisper comes, seek refuge in Allah: A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim21.
Bad thoughts that scare you
Some Companions told Nabi ﷺ: we get thoughts we would hate to even say. He said: that is clear iman22. Hating the thought shows the faith in your heart. And Allah has forgiven my ummah for what comes into their minds, as long as they do not act on it or say it23.

Magic is real, and it is a major sin
Sihr (magic) is not the stage tricks people do for fun. It is when a person works with evil jinn, through words, knots or other things, to harm someone. Allah tells us in one ayah24:
- It comes from the devils. They taught people magic.
- It can cause real harm, even between a husband and wife.
- But it cannot harm anyone except by Allah's permission. The magician is never stronger than Allah.
- It brings no good. People learn what harms them and does not help them.
Nabi ﷺ said: stay away from the seven sins that destroy. The first is shirk, the second is magic25. So a Muslim does not do magic, learn it, pay for it, or ask anyone to do it, even to "undo" other magic. We seek refuge from the evil of those who blow on knots26, which scholars explain as people who do magic.
Even Nabi ﷺ was once affected by magic, and Allah cured him27. So it is not a sign that someone is a bad Muslim. And if Allah cured him, He can cure you.
The full story: when magic was done on Nabi ﷺ
Aisha tells us that a man called Labid ibn al-A'sam did magic on Nabi ﷺ. For a time, Nabi ﷺ would think he had done something when he had not28.
He did not go to a magician. He made dua, and kept making dua for a long time. Then he told Aisha that Allah had answered him. Two men came to him. One asked: what is wrong with this man? The other said: magic, done by Labid, with a comb and some hair, hidden in a well called Dharwan29.
Nabi ﷺ went to the well with some Companions. Aisha asked: why did you not show it to people? He said: Allah has cured me, and I did not want to spread evil among people. Then he had the well filled in30.
What this teaches us
- The cure is dua, not another magician.
- No revenge drama. Nabi ﷺ cared about stopping evil, not spreading it.
A detail scholars discuss: most scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah say magic can truly harm the body and mind. A smaller group said most magic is illusion, like Pharaoh's magicians, whose ropes only seemed to move31. Both agree: it is real, it is a major sin, and it does nothing without Allah's permission.

People who claim to know the unseen
Only Allah knows the unseen and the future32. He shows some of it only to messengers He chooses33.
- Where their "true" news comes from. A jinn steals one true word and throws it to his friend, who mixes it with a hundred lies34.
- Just asking them is harmful. Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, his salah is not accepted for forty nights35.
- Believing them is worse. Whoever believes him has turned away from what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ36.
This includes palm reading, coffee-cup reading, tarot cards, and horoscopes. Weather forecasts are different: they are based on things anyone can study.
Warning signs
Walk away from a so-called healer who:
- Asks for your mother's name, a piece of your clothing, or your hair.
- Gives you strange letters, numbers or squares to wear, burn, or drink in water.
- Says he can see jinn on you, or names the relative who "did magic" on you. This breaks families.
- Wants to be alone with you, or tells you to stop your medicine.
- Asks for more money again and again for secret rituals.
Real ruqyah is simple and open: Quran and duas, nothing hidden.

The evil eye is real
The evil eye (al-ayn) is harm that can come when someone looks at something they admire or envy. Nabi ﷺ said: the evil eye is real. If anything could get ahead of qadr (Allah's decree), the evil eye would37. It can happen even when the person loves you and means no harm. We seek refuge from the evil of the envier when he envies38.
The full story: the Companion struck by the eye
Sahl ibn Hunayf was bathing. Amir ibn Rabi'ah passed by and said: I have never seen skin as beautiful as this. At once Sahl fell to the ground39.
Nabi ﷺ asked who had caused it. They said Amir. Nabi ﷺ said: why would one of you kill his brother? If he sees something he likes, let him pray for blessing on it. Then he told Amir to make wudu, washing his face, arms, knees and more, and the water was poured over Sahl40.
What this teaches us
- Good people can give the eye without meaning harm.
- The fix is simple: pray for blessing. No shame, no feud.
What to do about it
- When you admire something, yours or someone else's, say barakallahu lak (may Allah bless it for you)41. Many scholars also recommend ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah42.
- If you know who caused it, you may kindly ask them to wash for you. Nabi ﷺ said: if you are asked to wash, then wash43. Do not take offense if someone asks you.
- Ruqyah for the evil eye is from the Sunnah44.
- Do not live in fear of it. You do not need to hide every blessing or suspect every visitor. The same adhkar protect you from the eye and from jinn.

How to protect yourself
The protection Nabi ﷺ taught is free, short, and anyone can do it. You need no special person, object or place.
1. Trust Allah first
Shaytan cannot harm the believers at all, except by Allah's permission. So let the believers put their trust in Allah45. Keep your five salah. A person who remembers Allah is not an easy target.
2. The morning and evening adhkar
- Say three times, morning and evening: Bismillahilladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa huwas-Sami'ul-Alim. In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the sky can harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. Nothing will suddenly harm the one who says it46.
- Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times, morning and evening. They will be enough for you against everything47.
- The full lists are on our morning adhkar and evening adhkar pages.
3. Before you sleep
- Ayat al-Kursi48. Allah sends a guard to stay with you, and no shaytan comes near you until morning49.
- The last three surahs. Every night, Nabi ﷺ cupped his hands, blew into them lightly, recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and wiped his hands over his body, starting with his head and face. He did this three times50.
- The last two ayat of Al-Baqarah51. Recited at night, they are enough for you52.
- All of these are on our bedtime adhkar page.
The full story: the thief who taught Ayat al-Kursi
Abu Hurayrah was guarding the Ramadan charity food. Three nights in a row, a man came to steal from it. The first two times he begged, saying he was poor with a family, and Abu Hurayrah let him go. Each morning Nabi ﷺ said: he lied to you, and he will come back53.
On the third night the man said: let me go and I will teach you words that will help you. When you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi. Allah will keep a guard with you, and no shaytan will come near you until morning. Nabi ﷺ said: he told you the truth, though he is a liar. That was a shaytan54.
What this teaches us
- Ayat al-Kursi protects you at night. Even a shaytan admitted it.
- Shaytan is weak. One Companion caught him three times.
4. Small habits through the day
- Say Bismillah when you enter your home and when you eat. Then shaytan says: no place to stay here tonight, and no dinner55.
- At nightfall, keep small children close for a while, and close your doors saying Bismillah56.
- Recite Surah Al-Baqarah at home. Shaytan runs from a house where it is recited57.
- At a new place, say: A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created. Nothing will harm you until you leave58.
- After a bad dream, spit lightly to your left and seek refuge in Allah. It will not harm you59.

Ruqyah: healing with the Quran and dua
Ruqyah means reciting Quran and duas over a sick or hurting person, often blowing lightly after. It is from the Sunnah, for illness, the evil eye and magic.
The one rule: Nabi ﷺ said: there is no harm in ruqyah as long as it has no shirk in it60. So it uses Quran, Allah's names and clear duas, with no calling on jinn and no secret words, knowing that the cure comes from Allah.
Ruqyah you can do yourself
- Al-Fatiha. Some Companions recited it over a chief who had been bitten, and he was cured. Nabi ﷺ smiled and said: how did you know it is a ruqyah?61.
- Al-Falaq and An-Nas. When Nabi ﷺ was ill, he recited them and blew over his body62.
- Hand on the pain. Say Bismillah three times, then seven times: A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir, I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and fear63.
- Jibril's ruqyah for Nabi ﷺ: Bismillahi arqik, min kulli shay'in yu'dhik, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ayni hasid, Allahu yashfik, bismillahi arqik. In the name of Allah I do ruqyah for you, from everything that harms you, from every evil soul or envious eye. May Allah cure you64.
Reading over yourself is best. Nabi ﷺ described seventy thousand of his ummah who enter Jannah without reckoning: they do not ask others for ruqyah, and they trust their Lord65. Asking someone is still allowed: whoever can help his brother, let him do it66. Parents can read over their children.
Paying for ruqyah
The Companions who read Al-Fatiha were given sheep, and Nabi ﷺ told them to take them67. So a fair payment for real ruqyah is allowed. The problem is strange rituals, claims to see the unseen, and endless charges that leave you more afraid each time.
Amulets and charms
Nabi ﷺ said: spells, charms and love-potions are shirk68. This includes beads, blue "eye" charms, threads, and papers with unknown writing, worn to keep harm away. Scholars differ about hanging a paper with only Quran on it: some early scholars allowed it, many did not. Reciting is what Nabi ﷺ taught, so the safer way is to recite it, not wear it.

Not everything is jinn: see a doctor too
Jinn, magic and the evil eye are real. But they are not the cause of most problems. Most illness has a medical cause. Most family fights come from words and hurt feelings. Most hard times are the normal tests of life.
- Nabi ﷺ said: Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down its cure69.
- He said: use medicine, O servants of Allah70.
- Do both. Ruqyah and medicine are not rivals. Allah may put your cure in either one.
Mental health. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, seizures and hearing voices are illnesses with treatment. Some people are told they "just have jinn" and suffer for years without help, or are even hurt by people "beating the jinn out". That is not from Islam. Please see a doctor, and keep up your dua and Quran too.
Can a jinn affect a person's body? Most scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah say yes, and many point to the ayah about a person made mad by the touch of shaytan71. But they also say it is rare and should never be the first guess. Even then, the cure is Quran, dua and adhkar, with no strange rituals and no violence.

Common questions
- I think someone has done magic on me. What should I do?
- Stay calm. See a doctor first to rule out a normal cause. Keep your five prayers and your daily adhkar, and read ruqyah over yourself: Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs. Make dua, as Nabi ﷺ did72. Do not accuse a relative without clear proof.
- My mother says my illness is the evil eye. Should I stop my medicine?
- No. Keep your medicine, and you can also do ruqyah for the eye73. Both together is the Sunnah way74.
- Someone praised my baby, and now I am worried.
- Say: barakallahu fih, may Allah bless him. Read Al-Falaq and An-Nas and blow lightly over your baby. Then let it go. Most people who praise your child love them.
- Is it okay to read my horoscope just for fun?
- It is best to avoid it. Horoscopes claim to know your future, and only Allah knows the unseen75.
- Can I wear a blue eye bead or a red thread for protection?
- No. Nabi ﷺ called charms shirk76. Take it off, and say the morning and evening adhkar instead.
- A raqi says he can see who did magic on me.
- Do not trust that. Only Allah knows the unseen. Such claims are guesses or come from jinn, who mix one truth with a hundred lies77. Find someone who only reads Quran and sahih duas, or read over yourself.
- I am scared to sleep alone, or to be in the dark.
- Many people feel this, often from childhood stories. Make wudu, recite Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs, and sleep. Allah keeps a guard with you until morning78.
- Should I tell my children about jinn?
- Yes, gently. Teach them that jinn are real, some are Muslim, and Allah protects us when we say Bismillah and the adhkar. Never use jinn to scare them into behaving. A child should grow up loving Allah, not afraid of the dark.
