How to read a source

What the grades mean

Every narration outside the two Sahihs carries the verdict of the scholars who judged its chain. Those verdicts sit on the card, and they do not always agree with each other - which is itself worth seeing.

SahihAuthentic. The chain is sound the whole way back.
HasanGood. Slightly below sahih, still acted upon.
Da'ifWeak. Something in the chain does not hold. Not used to establish a ruling.
Mawdu'Fabricated. Kept here only so you can look one up and find out that it is.
Why Bukhari and Muslim have no grade on each hadith. Their authors' own condition for including a narration was that it be authentic, so the collection is the grade. The four Sunan gathered more widely and on purpose, which is why their narrations are judged one by one.
Where this text comes from. The Arabic and the English here are held on Sunnah Daily's own servers, from an openly licensed public-domain edition, the Hadith API by Fawaz Ahmed (translators and graders: Source credits). Nothing is fetched from anyone else while you read, and nothing here has been summarised, shortened or rewritten by us - a narration appears as it was recorded.
