Yunus was sent to Nineveh, a great city deep in stubborn idolatry. Year after year they refused him, and finally, before Allah's permission came, he walked out on the assignment, angry, done, certain they were beyond hope.
He boarded a ship; a storm rose; lots were drawn to lighten the load, and his name came up, three times. Swallowed by the great fish, he found himself in three layers of darkness: night, sea, and whale. From there rose the dua the ummah has repeated in every crisis since: “La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin”, “There is no god but You! Glory to You! I was one of the wrongdoers!” (Quran 21:87). Allah saved him, and then the twist that shames every despair: the people of Nineveh, the “hopeless” ones, believed, all of them, the only whole city in the Quran to do so after warning came (10:98).
