Did the Prophet ﷺ help at home?

Maturity in a marriage comes down to one move. Before you complain about your spouse, ask what you did today.

A husband in the kitchen setting a plate down in front of his wife at the table, morning light, both smiling a little

In marriage, maturity is everything.

Not age. Not how long you have been married. Maturity. And you can tell how mature a person is in a marriage by one word they keep using.

Deserve. “I deserve more attention.” “I deserve a break.” “I deserve better than this.”

You hear it everywhere now. It sounds like self-respect. In a marriage it is poison.

Move one word

Move from “what I deserve” to “how can I serve.”

That is the whole shift. That is what maturity in a marriage looks like. It sounds small. It changes the whole house.

Why the deserve mindset fails

Because both of you have one. You are sitting there thinking about what you deserve. So is your spouse. Two people waiting to be served, and nobody serving. That is where the silence comes from.

Islam does not run the home that way. It says do your best, because you are doing it for Allah first. Not for what you get back.

Before you complain, ask yourself one thing

What did you do?

Not what did they fail to do. What did you do today for your spouse? Be honest. If the answer is nothing, that is where you start. Not with the complaint.

And here is the part people miss. When you do your best, it pulls the other person towards their best. Serving is not losing. Serving is how you lead a home.

Serve first. Then see if you still feel like asking what you deserve.

This is what Nabi ﷺ did

Aisha was asked what Nabi ﷺ did when he was at home. She said he kept himself busy serving his family, and when the prayer came, he got up and went to it.

The best man who ever lived. At home, serving. Not waiting to be served.

And he said you are rewarded for everything you spend for Allah, even a morsel of food you put in your wife’s mouth. A morsel. That is how small serving is allowed to be, and it still counts.

What to do

  • Tonight, do one thing for your spouse before you ask anything of them.
  • When the complaint comes up in your head, answer it with “what did I do today?” before you say it out loud.
  • Serve when you do not feel like it. That is the only time it means anything.

What not to do

  • Do not keep score. The moment you count, you are back to deserve.
  • Do not serve to get something back. Do it for Allah and let Him handle the rest.
  • Do not wait for your spouse to go first. Whoever reads this first is the one who goes first.

One line that matters

Serving is not the same as being used. If you are being hurt, or you are afraid of the person you live with, that is not a marriage asking you to serve more. Tell someone you trust and get help.

One last thing

Nabi ﷺ said the best of you is the best to his wife. Best to her. Not best at asking what he deserves from her. That is maturity.
