Is haya only about how women dress?

He is strict about her clothes, and shouts at her at home. Both of those are the same word.

You know a man like this. Very particular about what his wife wears outside. Speaks to her at home in a way he would never speak to a stranger.

He thinks he is being religious about the first one. He does not connect it to the second one at all.

They are the same word. Haya.

Is haya only about how women dress?

No. Haya usually gets explained as clothing, and usually explained to women. That is a small part of a much bigger idea.

Look at the order in the Quran. Allah tells the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. Only in the next verse does He say the same to the believing women.

Men were told first.

So what does haya actually mean?

It is closer to self respect. Not wanting to do the low thing, even when nobody would ever find out.

So it covers how you argue. What you repeat about people. What you look at when the house is asleep. How you speak to the person you married.

Nabi ﷺ said haya brings nothing but good. Nothing but good, in every part of life it touches.

Modesty that only shows up in front of guests is not modesty. It is a performance.

Where does haya show up in a marriage?

In not repeating what happens between the two of you. Your marriage is not material for a group chat. You will be over the mood by Friday, and your friends will still remember what you told them.

In not humiliating somebody who cannot walk away from you. Anyone can be polite to a stranger. Being careful with your spouse, who has to live with you, is much harder.

In what you allow yourself to look at. This has damaged more marriages in the last twenty years than almost anything else, and almost nobody says it out loud.

What does haya look like when nobody is watching?

Aisha used to go into her room, where Nabi ﷺ and her father Abu Bakr were buried, without her outer covering. She said it was only her husband and her father there.

After Umar was buried in the same room, she never went in again without being fully covered, because she felt shy in front of Umar.

There was nobody alive in that room to see her. She kept it anyway. That is haya: not for the audience.

What to do

  • Keep your marriage private. What happens between you does not belong to your friends or your family.
  • Talk about your spouse when they are not there the way you would if they walked in.
  • Be honest with yourself about what you look at when nobody knows. That is exactly where this word applies.
  • Remember that being polite to a stranger is easy. The test is the person who cannot leave.

What not to do

  • Do not reduce haya to a dress code, and do not aim it only at women. The Quran spoke to men first.
  • Do not humiliate somebody in front of other people and then call it a joke.
  • Do not confuse being awkward with being modest. Not being able to talk about something with your own spouse is not haya.

One last thing

Nabi ﷺ said faith has more than seventy branches, and haya is one of them. One of the pieces your faith is built from, not something added on top.

This week, speak to your spouse the way you speak to a guest. Just for one week. See what changes.
